10 Benefits of Clear Plastic Aligners

Posted on 9/30/2021 by Santa Clarita Advance Dentistry
Smiling Woman from Santa Clarita Advanced Dentistry in Santa Clarita, CAIt’s funny to think back to a few decades before the 2000’s. A lot of people were sure that we would have flying cars and hover-boards, just like in Back to the Future. While that is not he case, we do have a lot of impressive technological innovations.

One of the simpler innovations that is extremely impressive, is the invention of clear aligners. We’ve all seen the trope of the kid, or teen who has braces and gets picked on. Eventually their teeth straighten out and they go from ugly duckling to beautiful swan.

Well, who would have ever thought that instead of time-traveling or flying cars, our brightest scientific minds would create a fantastic alternative to braces? Today we’re going to talk about ten benefits of clear plastic aligners, as well as some cons!

Cons of Clear Plastic Aligners

First, let’s talk about some cons. While clear plastic aligners are awesome, they do have a few cons, and we feel it’s only right that we disclose and discuss them with you. Below are a few cons:

•  Not Recommended for severely crooked or misaligned teeth.
•  Buttons may be needed to help the aligners stay in place.
•  You will need to brush and floss your teeth more often.

We’re going to break it down a little further. Check with your dentist first, but here are some rule of thumb scenarios where clear aligners might not be for you: If your crowded teeth are the result of a jaw that is too small. Secondly, if your overbite or underbite is the result of a misaligned jaw, then you may need a more comprehensive treatment plan from an orthodontist.

Next, in certain situations buttons are needed behind teeth to aid the aligners stay in place. It also helps shift teeth as it provides a gripping point. Check out the video below to learn more.

The last con for clear aligners is that you will have to floss and brush your teeth more often. You must take your aligners off every time you eat or drink anything that is not water, and then you have to floss and brush to avoid food debris being trapped. Since you have to wear your aligners 20-22 hours a day for the best results, it can be tricky flossing and brushing after every meal. Especially if you’re out and about.

1) Straighten Your Teeth in Half the Time

Although every case and situation is different, clear plastic aligners have proven to be up to twice as fast as traditional braces when it comes to straightening teeth. A lot of it depends on the user to be disciplined enough to wear them when they’re supposed to. However, one of the reasons why aligners are faster is because trays are customized during the course of treatment. Since the patient is constantly receiving new custom trays, the aligners are constantly working to improve the look of your teeth.

2) Benefit of Clear Plastic Aligners – They Are Invisible

This one is kind of obvious and perhaps the biggest selling point. Being invisible is huge! Not only for kids who may want to avoid being called names or picked on, which I have to say, I don’t remember that being the case growing up.

It’s also huge for adults whose parents may not have been able to afford braces for them as kids. A lot of adults think it’s too late to fix their teeth when they age. Mostly because we associate braces with K-12 kids. Thanks to clear plastic aligners, adults can fix their teeth discretely.

3) No Food Restrictions

Above, when we talked about cons, we went over how you have to brush and floss every time you eat or drink something that is not water. While that can be a bit annoying, at least you can eat or drink whatever you fancy. If you were to chose braces, there is a list of things that you can’t eat or chew.

Below is a list of foods that you can’t eat or chew when you choose braces:

•  Ice - Chewing ice will destroy your braces.
•  Pizza Crust - The hard Crust will bend wires.
•  Hard Pretzels - Bends wires, loosens bands, and knocks off brackets.
•  Doritos, Tacos, and other chips - Will break off brackets.
•  Caramel Candy, Chewing Gum - Sticky goo which pulls off wires and braces.
•  Bagels, Bones - Bends the wire and knocks off brackets.
•  Beef Jerky - Tough as nails.
•  Suckers (Lollipops) - Too hard and full of sugar.
•  Nuts - Cannot eat nuts of any kind.
•  Ribs - Knocks off brackets.
•  Popcorn - The little shells get between the gum and bands, causes pain.
•  Corn On the Cob - You can eat corn off the cob though.
•  Anything Sticky.

4) Clear Plastic Aligners Are Convenient.

While it is recommended that you wear your aligners 20-22 hours a day, somedays you may need to have them off a little longer. This is not an option when wearing braces. The convenience of being able to take off your aligners is strictly revolutionary.

5) Maintaining Proper Hygiene Is Easier.

When you have braces, flossing and getting in between every crevice is time consuming. With clear plastic aligners you can clean your gums, teeth, and other dental parts thoroughly. Aligners can be cleaned separately. No trying to maneuver around wires and brackets.

6) Clear Plastic Aligners Are Comfortable.

While aligners aren’t comfortable like a new pillow, or the first time you laid down on a Tempur-Pedic mattress, it is more comfortable than braces. To begin, aligners take up less space in your mouth. You can usually tell when people have braces on, even before they open their mouths. I’ve never been able to guess when someone is wearing aligners.

Braces often cut your mouth and cheeks for weeks until your moth finally gets tougher and used to the braces being there.

7) Fewer Dentist Visits.

With aligners you only have to wear a set of trays for a few weeks before you switch to a new set. Depending on your aligner, you might receive them all by mail in a one-time shipment or it can take a few shipments. Regardless, most people won’t have to visit their dentist that often, maybe once every 6-8 weeks.

8) Avoid Side Effects from Braces.

Above, we touched on how comfortable aligners can be when compared to braces. Now we are taking it a bit further. Here are some of the side effects you might endure should you choose braces.
•  Oral Abrasion - We talked about braces cutting your mouth and cheeks when things are going right, but what about when things go wrong. You can receive other types of injuries in your mouth when brackets break or when wires poke loose.
•  Flossing Challenges - Flossing in between brackets and wires is challenging. Many people tend to get understandably frustrated and give up flossing while they have their braces. This can lead to tooth decay and other problems.
•  Risk Of Discoloration - I have seen this on some of my friends who had braces. If you follow all the rules and do as your dentist says, if you brush and floss properly in between the wires and brackets, if you avoid all the foods you’re not supposed to eat. Then you should be fine. However, I have seen a few people who do not follow all the rules and end up staining their teeth. This is not a problem with clear aligners.

9) Benefit of Clear Plastic Aligners – Confidence.

Many people rock their braces and have confidence that can’t be shaken. However, not having braces and then Boom! Having braces the next day can mess with people’s confidence. Some people try not to smile or converse that much because they still haven’t got use to wearing braces or seeing themselves with braces. And they aren’t used to letting people see them with their new braces.

Your confidence does not go down with aligners. If anything, you become more confident knowing your teeth are getting straighter and there is little impact to your daily life. In fact, most people may never notice until you bring it up.

10) Plastic Aligners Are Predictable.

Finally, number ten, your treatment is predictable. Patients go through a fully computerized treatment schedule. It’s easy to know what to expect and how long they need to wear each tray and when they need to change trays.
